Trongsa Dzong - The Longest Fortress in Bhutan

Attracting all the attention with its enormous size and beautiful architectural design, the Trongsa Dzong is one of the largest Dzong in Bhutan. Trongsa Dzong means the Fortress of the Vanguard of Warriors and is stunningly built on a mountain spur high above the gorges of the roaring Mangde Chhu (Trongsa river). The Dzong controlled the east-west trade for centuries as the only road connecting the eastern and western Bhutan passed through the courtyard of the Dzong. The many small structures that comprise the Dzong trails down the ridge and is connected by a succession of alley-like corridors, wide stone stairs and beautiful paved courtyards.

Travelers who happens to be visiting Trongsa or travelling by the East – West lateral highway are greeted by this magnificent Dzong which holds a very important place in the history of Bhutan. The most stunning view of the Dzong can be enjoyed from the View Point Cafe opposite to the Dzong. For an avid photographer the view from here is spectacular with the backdrop of the Black Mountains and the scattered settlements across the hillside.

Historically the Dzong holds a significant place among the people and the Monarchs of Bhutan as the first King (Ugyen Wangchuck) and the second King (Jigme Wangchuck) ruled the country from this Dzong and even today the Prince before ascending the throne has to serve as the Trongsa Penlop (Governor).

The view from there is the panoramic sight of almost all the tallest Himalayan Mountain of Bhutan like majestic Gangkar Puensum, formidable Table Mountain and Tiger Mountain. As it is located at the top, the view of the Himalayan ranges is better than anywhere in the area, even as compared to famous Dochula Pass.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.
