Tashigang to Lungchutse Hike

From Dochula to Punakha Via Tashigang and Lungchu Tse Monasteries

If you take the diversion farm road to the right-side before reaching Dochula Pass, the narrow road leads through a thick vegetation of Hemlocks and Junipers, passing by a small stream taking its due course along the exotic chirping birds till you reach Tashigang Monastery on the hill top. Along with the main temple, Tashigang Monastery is a complex of meditation and retreat huts spread all over.

The whole area is very spiritual and religiously blessed as over the centuries numerous Chief Abbots of Bhutan had lived and meditated here. The 3-storied building made of wood and rammed earth houses various statues of the 12th, 14th and 52nd Chief Abbots of Bhutan. The most sacred relic includes the head of a horse that belonged to the 12th Chief Abbot who is considered the reincarnation of Avalokitesvara (God of Compassion).

Among some incredible myths and stories about the area, the most amazing and noticeable miracle is the warmth that is said to be generated from the statue of the 12th Chief Abbot. The monastery is located at 3,700 meters above sea level and is extremely cold with temperatures plummeting to zero freezing any liquid offered on the altar. However this is not the case in the middle floor where it houses the sacred statue of the 12th Chief Abbot and the statue is believed to generate heat and keep the room warm. Even the monks take refuge in this room in the cold winter when temperature falls down to minus degree Celsius.

From the Tashigang Goemba a one and half hour hike leads to another monastery called Lungchutse. The hike is through the deep forest of junipers, entangled with numerous multi colored Rhododendrons trees in the Spring. Rhododendron flowers bloom in different colors of red, purple, pink and yellow along with many other highland wildflowers making the trail as beautiful as it could.

Lungchu Tse Monastery is also a very spiritual and blessed holy site with many enlightening stories of famous Buddhist scholars and practitioners who resided here over the centuries. Located on the hilltop Lungchutse Monastery enjoys spectacular views of the landscape, snowcapped mountains and valleys far below. While the view maybe beautiful from the famed Dochula Pass however it is nothing compared to from the top of Lungchu Tse Monastery. The Monastery offers panoramic views of almost all the tallest Snow Capped Himalayan ranges of Bhutan like the majestic Gangkar Puensum (highest unclimbed mountain in the world), the formidable Table Mountains, Tiger Mountain and never ending low elevation undulating valleys with scattered villages.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.

Exploring the Tang valley and its landscape on horseback is the perfect outdoors activity for the adventurous traveler as well as a family group. Tang is a wide open valley (albeit small) so the horse riding is a relaxed experience while feasting in the scenic landscape of mountains and rivers.
